Service Description

Saturday Ceramics is a welcoming and flexible space for beginners and intermediate potters to develop confidence working with clay. Whether you're just starting out or refining your skills, this course offers a supportive environment to experiment and grow. The course structure changes each term, with a focus on skills needed to realise ideas brought by the group. This June-July term will focus on glaze chemistry and the various finishes we can achieve in an electric oxidation kiln. We will aim to consider the final finish of a piece before we begin work on it, since visuals and texture are so fundamental to the way someone else will interact and understand the work. This term will be aimed at those who have already completed at least 6 sessions of pottery, here or elsewhere. Each session runs from 10 AM - 1 PM starting with a review of kiln-fired work over tea and coffee, followed by hands-on making time. Feel free to bring a packed lunch/nibbles if you like! With two facilitators guiding a group of 6-12, as well as more experienced potters in the group, there’s plenty of support for those trying new techniques or developing their own ideas. All materials, tools, and firing costs are included, just bring yourself and an open mind. If you have a specific project in mind, you’re welcome to bring extra tools or materials to experiment with. Booking a six-week block provides the best value and the most well-rounded experience, but experienced potters can also drop into individual sessions if they prefer, by selecting the drop in option from our full course list.. Come for the clay, stay for the experiments, the creative journey & the community. Each session begins with inspiration from a renowned ceramic or sculptural artist, past or present. We’ve explored figures like Magdalena Odundo, Edmund de Waal, Bernard Leach, and Lucy Rie, introducing participants to new influences and expanding creative perspectives. This approach makes our sessions more than just about making, they’re part of a wider artistic and cultural journey.
